Tommies Defeat Mounties
The Mount Allison Mounties men's basketball team returned home looking to build upon a 2-game win streak as they played host to the #3 ranked team in the country, the St. Thomas Tommies, at the McCormack Gymnasium in Sackville.
Both teams had an offensive outburst in the first quarter with St. Thomas finishing the frame ahead by a score of 29-23. Former Mountie Noah McCarthy led all scorers for the quarter with 11 and finished the afternoon with 29 to lead all scorers. Jonas Munroe led the way for the Mounties with 9 points of his own to keep the game close.
The Tommie defense would pick up in the second quarter however holding the home Mounties to just 9 in the frame, and Noah McCarthy racked up another 10 points to give himself 21 going into the break with his side ahead by a score of 51-32.
Mount Allison would have a better offensive output in the third quarter but were unable to slow down the high-powered offense of St. Thomas as the deficit would grow to 24 by the end of the quarter. Geoffrey Lavoie had 6 points in the frame for STU and Ryan Norris provided a spark off the bench for Coach Chapman, chipping in 8 including two threes in the quarter.
A run to begin the quarter for the Mounties got the deficit back under 20, but it would be too little too late as St. Thomas once again pulled their lead even further, eventually winning the game by 30 and a score of 101-71. River Lanz hit two threes for the Tommies in the quarter and Kaden Augustin hit 2 threes and had 8 points for Mount Allison in the fourth.
St. Thomas (11-1) continue to hold onto first place in the ACAA and will return to action Saturday, February 3rdin Halifax as they take on the UKC Blue Devils. Mount Allison (4-8) will look to redeem themselves on their home floor tomorrow afternoon, January 28th, as they welcome the Holland Hurricanes.
