The Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics capitalized on great playmaking and a consistent offensive presence against the Holland Hurricanes en route to a 104-92 win at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Friday.
In a similar fashion to the earlier women's game between Holland and MSVU, the men put on a tight battle through one and a half quarters, with points going both ways. It took until a series of Hurricanes timeouts in the middle of the third quarter for a team to stretch out a wide lead, as the timeouts went against Holland and the game went from a 34-34 tie to the Mystics leading 54-39 at halftime.
The third quarter saw more point exchanging for most of it, but MSVU began to crawl further ahead in the closing minutes, going from leading by 15 to putting a 28-point gap on the scoresheet at the buzzer. While the Hurricanes found a bit of their footing late in the fourth quarter, their late-game efforts weren't enough to mount a comeback attempt.
Keigan Feron led the Mystics with 21 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Isaac Matheson, Jaydan Smith, Jaxon Smith, and Demeric Mercer combined for a total of 55 points, 20 rebounds, 14 assists, and 10 steals.
Aaron Simmons led the Hurricanes with 28 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Spencer Rossiter, Michael Surur, Jaidon Martin, and Owen Parsons each contributed between 10 and 14 points. The group put in a strong effort with the absence of top player Bryce Corless.
The Mystics improved to 3-0 and will return to action in two weekends with a home game against the STU Tommies on Saturday, Nov 16. The Hurricanes dropped to 1-1 and will look to get back on the winning track in two weekends with a home match against the UNBSJ Seawolves on Sunday, Nov. 10.
