Seawolves defeat Hurricanes to advance to championship

The UNBSJ Seawolves secured a hard-fought 78-68 victory over the Holland College Hurricanes on March 1, 2025, at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre, advancing to the ACAA Championship final. They will now face the MSVU Mystics for the title, while Holland's season comes to an end.

The game was tightly contested from the start, with UNBSJ holding a narrow 16-15 lead after the first quarter. Jack Fury-Miller was instrumental early, scoring 8 points, including two three-pointers, to give UNBSJ the edge. Holland's Aaron Simmons kept his team close with 6 points in the quarter. 

UNBSJ extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Holland 20-15. Fury-Miller continued his hot shooting, adding another 7 points, while Ethan Szemerda contributed 5 points and 3 assists. Holland struggled to find their rhythm, with Bryce Corless and Dorrell Bedminster combining for just 5 points in the quarter. By halftime, UNBSJ had built a 36-30 lead. 

The third quarter saw UNBSJ maintain their momentum, outscoring Holland 20-18. Fury-Miller and Ben Power combined for 12 points, while Szemerda facilitated the offense with 3 assists. Holland's Simmons tried to keep his team in the game, scoring 7 points in the quarter, but UNBSJ's defense held firm, forcing 4 turnovers. By the end of the third, UNBSJ led 56-48.

In the fourth quarter, Holland made a push to close the gap, outscoring UNBSJ 20-22. Simmons and Zachary Dawkins combined for 13 points, but UNBSJ's balanced attack and clutch free-throw shooting sealed the victory. Fury-Miller and Szemerda hit key shots down the stretch, and UNBSJ's defense forced 3 critical turnovers in the final minutes to secure the win.

For UNBSJ, Jack Fury-Miller led the way with a game-high 26 points, including 5 three-pointers, while Ethan Szemerda added 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Ben Power contributed 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, and Aj Nash filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Defensively, Power was a standout, holding Holland's Bryce Corless to just 3 points on 1-of-17 shooting, including 0-of-5 from beyond the arc. His defensive presence disrupted Holland's offensive flow and was a key factor in the win.

For Holland, Aaron Simmons was the standout performer, finishing with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Dorrell Bedminster added 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Zachary Dawkins chipped in 12 points and 5 rebounds.

UNBSJ shot 41.5% from the field and 72.7% from the free-throw line, while Holland struggled with 36.4% shooting from the field and 56.3% from the line. UNBSJ dominated in assists (26 to 19) and blocks (9 to 3), while Holland held a slight edge in steals (11 to 10). UNBSJ's ability to convert turnovers into points and their balanced offensive attack proved to be the difference in the game.

With this win, UNBSJ advances to the ACAA Championship final, where they will face the MSVU Mystics. Holland's season comes to an end, but their effort, led by Simmons and Bedminster, kept them competitive throughout the game.
