Tommies down Hurricanes

The women's Hurricanes basketball team (9-2) looked to replicate their winning ways from the night previous, in their second matchup against the STU Tommies (3-6).

The Canes struggled early in the first quarter,  turning the ball over 16 times, and scoring their first bucket after five minutes of play. The Tommies ended the first quarter up 16-8.

Tommies fourth year center Charlie Connors couldn't miss from the free-throw line, going 10-10 from the charity stripe. Connors led both teams in points finishing with 13 at the half. The strong scoring production helped maintain the Tommies lead, who were up 31-22 going into the third quarter.

The Tommies outscored the Canes 12-9 in the third quarter, getting their lead to a comfortable 39-31.

The Tommies continued to outplay the Hurricanes who struggled in this game. The Tommies were able to coast comfortably in the fourth quarter to a 54-38 win.

Key players for the Hurricanes include Alexa Rancourt who had 10 points, with 6 rebounds, and Lauren Armstrong who was one point away from a double double with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Key players from the Tommies include Charlee Connors who had 19 points on 100% free-throw shooting, and Kylee Roi, who had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 steals.

A major upset ends the Hurricanes five game win streak, as they remain in top spot in the standings at 9-3. They look to get back in the win column as they travel to Moncton, N.B. to face the Crandall Chargers (1-11) on Jan. 25.

The STU Tommies who now improve to 4-6 in the league will look to keep on rolling as they travel to Saint John, N.B. to face the UNBSJ Seawolves (2-10) on Jan. 25.
