ACAA Athletes of the Week - Week of Nov. 6, 2021

In a bit of retroactive recognition, our ACAA Athletes of the Week this time around showcase some of our standout performers from the recent ACAA Soccer Championships and the ACAA Women's Rugby final.

Kate Bennett, UNB - Women's Rugby

Teams look to their captains for leadership in big moments, and Kate Bennett was a true stabilizer for UNB in the ACAA Women's Rugby Final in the face of pressure from the University of King's College Blue Devils, as her six conversions propelled the Reds to their sixth consecutive ACAA banner in a 62-5 victory over the Blue Devils.

The Hantsport, N.S. native is in her third year of eligibility at UNB, where she is enrolled in the Kinesiology program.

Emily Cormier, Holland College - Soccer

The second-year striker from Charlottetown played a big role for the Hurricanes at the ACAA Women's Soccer Championship in Halifax, helping the squad secure its second straight ACAA title.

The Second Team All-Conference member provided an offensive jolt for the Hurricanes in their semifinal against the UNB-Saint John Seawolves, providing the insurance goal in a 4-1 victory before scoring what proved to be the championship-winning goal in Holland College's 2-0 victory over the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics to clinch gold.

The Hurricanes open this week's CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship in Toronto against the Vanier College Cheetahs on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Atlantic time.

Brett Springer, St. Thomas University - Soccer

After being named the ACAA Men's Soccer Player of the Year, the Bamberg, Ont. native lived up to the billing as he recorded a hat trick in the Tommies' 4-1 victory over the UNB-Saint John Seawolves in the semifinal of the ACAA Men's Soccer Championship.

Springer, an Arts student at St. Thomas, then came up big again for the Tommies in the final against Holland College, scoring the game-tying right before the end of the first half en route to St. Thomas defeating the Hurricanes on penalties to clinch the school's first ACAA men's soccer title since 2000.

The Tommies open this week's CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship in Calgary against the host SAIT Trojans on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Atlantic time.
