ACAA Athletes of the Week - Mar. 23, 2022

For our final Athlete of the Week recognition of the 2021-22 season, we are recognizing standout performers from the ACAA Basketball Championships, which were contested from March 6-13.

Kelsey Crocker, Mount St. Vincent University
The St. John's native, who was named ACAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year earlier in the week, concluded the ACAA portion of her playing career in a big way, putting up a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in Mount St. Vincent's semifinal victory over Mount Allison.

On home court in Halifax against St. Thomas, Crocker found her stride in the third quarter, scoring 10 of her 23 points in the frame to help push the Mystics ahead to stay as they held on for a 72-67 victory, giving the Mystics their third consecutive ACAA championship. In addition to her scoring output, Crocker also added seven rebounds and three assists in the gold medal matchup.

Crocker and the Mystics are now off in Nanaimo, B.C. for the CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship, hosted by Vancouver Island University, with play beginning on Friday.

Dawson Berze-Butts, Mount St. Vincent University
The third-year Mystic out of Sydney Mines was instrumental in leading the Mystics on their run to their first ACAA men's basketball championship since the 2010-11 season, in which they won a play-in game before proceeding to take out the top three seeds in the ACAA on the road.

Berze-Butts balled out for Mount St. Vincent, putting up 11 points, four assists and three rebounds in beating Mount Allison in the quarterfinal before posting a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mystics past top-seeded Holland College in the semifinals. In the championship game against St. Thomas in Fredericton, Berze-Butts scored 13 points, including the championship-winning basket with eight seconds to go in the 69-67 victory.

Berze-Butts and the Mystics are now off to Toronto for the CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship, hosted by Humber College beginning Friday.
