Chargers hold off late push from Seawolves

Saint John, NB – The Crandall University Chargers (2-1) led from the opening basket on their way to an 85-76 victory over the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves (1-3) Sunday night at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletic Centre.

The Chargers shot 71% from the field in the opening quarter and kept their hot shooting going for the remainder of the game. The Chargers were led by Gabriel Cormier and Devon Glenn who finished with 21 and 17 points, respectively. Ethan Szermerda had a team high 16 points and 8 rebounds.

It was a frustrating night for the Seawolves as they struggled from the field, and in the words of head coach, Paul Vaughan, "lacked energy on the defensive end of the floor."

The Seawolves closed the gap in the final quarter, coming within 11 thanks in large part to the second unit that Coach Vaughan implemented.

"The second unit came in and just put in more effort," said Vaughan of the late push. "Evan Cartwright came off the bench and really played to his strengths. Played a good high post, and shot the ball well."

The Seawolves will hit the road next weekend to play the MSVU Mystics and the Mount Allison University Mounties, and Coach Vaughan knows that it will be a tough test for his team on that road trip.

"A lot of our guys are going to have to do some soul searching and looking in the mirror to see how much they want to give to this team."

The next test for the Chargers will be the Holland College Hurricanes on November 18th.
