Alhaj Ali elevates Hurricanes to ACAA Final

For the Holland College Hurricanes, it was Mohammad Alhaj Ali who came through when they needed him the most.

The First Team All-Conference striker broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, and the Hurricanes completed a second half comeback to defeat the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics 2-1 to complete Saturday's action at HRM Harbour East Field in Dartmouth.

Second Team All-Conference member Parker MacLeod also scored for the Hurricanes, while First Team All-Conference member Luc Andriopoulos had the Mystics goal.

Alhaj Ali earned player of the game honours for Holland College, while Nick Bryden got the nod for the Mystics.

After establishing a consistent tempo and flow to the game, the Mystics were rewarded for their persistence as Andriopoulous corralled a rebound from Hurricanes keeper Keegan MacKinnon after he punched out a corner kick attempt, drilling the ball off the crossbar and in to give the Mystics the 1-0 lead headed into halftime.

The Hurricanes came out firing in the second half, as MacLeod took a feed inside the 18-yard box, beating Mystics keeper Kevin Abraham to level things in the 50th minute.

That set the stage for Alhaj Ali's late heroics, as he received a beautiful lob pass from MacLeod and poked it past Abraham with an outstretched leg to put the Hurricanes up to stay.

The Mystics applied plenty of pressure in the closing stages, with a number of corner kicks in added time, but in the end, they were unable to solve MacKinnon.

The Hurricanes will now meet the St. Thomas University Tommies, who knocked off the UNB-Saint John Seawolves 4-1 in the other semifinal, with the ACAA championship hanging in the balance. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Wickwire Field in Halifax, and the game will be available to stream live at ACAA.TV.
