UKC Blue Devils, the 2023-2024 Women's Basketball Champions

UKC Blue Devils, the 2023-2024 Women's Basketball Champions

The third-ranked University of King's College Blue Devils rebounded from a rough start to prevail in an underdog story for the ages against the top-ranked Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics on Sunday afternoon, winning the 2024 ACAA Women's Basketball Championship.

The match began with a wicked battle as both teams traded leads for five minutes. The second half of the first quarter saw the Mystics jump ahead from a 12-11 lead to a 19-13 lead with Amanda Pearcey, Nikki Arsenault, and Menna McCabe contributing big points. UKC called a timeout and was able to salvage a closer gap by the buzzer. The Mystics led 23-19 into the second quarter.

The Blue Devils mounted a wild comeback early in quarter two, as Alex Soyko, Andrea Hebert, and Jenna Bain applied multiple jump shots and layouts to get their team back in the lead (down 23-19 to lead 29-28). MSVU called a timeout with 6:36 remaining and the action ramped up, with each team exchanging leads once more. The Mystics called another timeout with four minutes remaining, but the play remained the same. They barely claimed the lead 40-39 at halftime.

UKC experienced an offensive explosion to begin the second half of the game, as the team went on a 20-8 run in the third quarter, leading 59-48 at the buzzer. Players like Arek Akeg and Lauren Ford joined the offensive combat with huge jump shots and layups. In the fourth and final quarter, MSVU's luck ran out, and despite calling four timeouts, they couldn't match the pure dominance of the Blue Devils, who ran away with the game and rightfully earned the win and the championship.

Andrea Hebert was named UKC's Player of the Game after recording 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Menna McCabe was named MSVU's Player of the Game after recording 11 points, 14 rebounds, and one assist.
