Hurricanes sweep past Seawolves

Once again, the Holland College Hurricanes find themselves competing for the ACAA Championship, working their way past the UNB-Saint John Seawolves in the opening game of the 2021 ACAA Women's Soccer Championship.

First Team All-Conference member Emily Lepine, who was named Holland College's player of the game, scored twice, while Second Team All-Conference member Emily Cormier and Keanna Ryan also scored for the Hurricanes, while First Team All-Conference member Karlee Duval replied for the Seawolves.

Makayla Martin picked up UNB-Saint John's player of the game honours.

The Hurricanes dominated possession in the opening 15 minutes of the contest, getting rewarded in the fifth minute as Lepine converted off a corner kick to open the scoring.

The Seawolves settled in to even out the pace of play from there, and they found the equalizer in the 24th minute as Duval got in alone and tucked it past Bri Spencer to make it 1-1.

However, Lepine found the back of the net again in the 43rd minute to put the Hurricanes up 2-1 before a looping shot from Ryan from 30 yards out beat Jillian Smith up high to put Holland College up 3-1 going into halftime.

The Hurricanes added to their lead early in the second half, as Emily Cormier tallied to make it 4-1 in the 58th minute, then settled into more of a defensive game from there, stifling the Seawolves at any opportunity they had to get back into the contest.

Holland College now awaits the winner of the second women's semifinal between the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics and the host University of King's College Blue Devils, which kicks off at 12:30, and will be live streamed at ACAA.tv.
