ACAA's Top Two Teams Play to Draw

Saint John, NB – Wednesday evening saw the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves and the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics play to a 0-0 tie in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association action.

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association dubbed this game one of its "Marquee Matchups" for the week, with the Mystics coming into the game with a 6-0-1 record, outscoring opponents 17-2 through their seven games, while the Seawolves were 6-1-1, with 12 goals for and 4 against.

The first chance of the match went to the Mystics three minutes in, when they sent a nice through ball down the left wing, but the shot was sent just wide. For the next 10 minutes the Mystics would take the bulk of possession, but the Seawolves would wake up 15 minutes in with sustained pressure in the Mystics' end.

In the 31st minute the Mystics would make another push, as it was once again Ashley Neves breaking in and putting a shot on goal, but Seawolves' keeper, Jillian Smith (Markham, ON) would make a leaping fingertip save to push it off the crossbar. She would then jump on the rebound before colliding with a teammate and remained down following the play, leaving the crowd in silence. She would get checked out by the medical support team and remain in the game.

Before the end of the half Annika Monroe would streak down the right wing for MSVU, but once again the shot would swing wide, as we would end the half deadlocked at zero.

Both teams would exchange chances early into the second half as the Mystics nearly connected on a corner kick during the 48th minute but couldn't connect, while the Seawolves would get their chance in the 51st minute when their leading goal scorer, Joce Splitgerber (Orono, ON), would be sent in but Morgan Gillis would come out to challenge to keep the score 0-0.

The final whistle sounded with both teams walking away with a point each from the draw. These two teams will face off again on the 22nd of October in Halifax.

Next action for the Seawolves comes on Saturday, October 15th when they host the Crandall University Chargers in their annual Grad Game, which will also serve as their Think Pink game. The Mystics will host the DAL AC Rams on the same day.
