The Holland Hurricanes roared around the Fox Meadow Golf Course on Sunday as they ran away with the men's and women's Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association championships.
The titles were the eleventh straight for the men and the second straight for the women (seventh in team history).
The men held a slim two stroke lead entering Sunday's final round after firing an opening round of 292 with UNB trailing at 294. The competing team's counted four scores from their five-man rosters each day. The Hurricanes were led by Connor Shea on day one with a score of 69 while Tyson Gavin (74), Bradley Jenkins (74) and Peter Frenette (75) also counted for the 'Canes.
On Sunday with the Varsity Reds and Hurricanes virtually deadlocked with eighteen holes to go the 'Canes played their best golf of the season.
A Tyson Gavin 68 led the charge along with strong play from Bradley Jenkins (70), Peter Frenette (71) and Spencer Compton (73) to give the Hurricanes a total of 282 on the day and 574 for the tournament. UNB posted a 293 score on day two and eventually fell short by 13 shots.
The St. Thomas Tommies finished the event in third place with a tournament total of 675.
Individually Tyson Gavin earned medalist honours with his total of 142. The top five was rounded out by Bradley Jenkins (HC, 144), Connor Shea (HC, 144), Sebastien Peterson (UNB, 144) and Peter Frenette (HC, 146) who all received ACAA All-Conference honours.
The Hurricanes, Varsity Reds and Tommies will all compete at the National Championship at Fox Meadow later this month.
Hurricanes Tyson Gavin reflects on the weekend.
"It was a great weekend of golf. The course was in great shape and we had some awesome weather for both days. Our team played great the entire tournament and it was a total team effort to win our conference championship again this year. It was a good warmup prior to competing at Nationals there in two weeks."
The women's division was controlled by the Hurricanes for the duration of the event with UNB playing solid golf during Sunday's round.
The Hurricanes two-day total of 337 was good enough for the 26 stroke victory over the UNB Varsity Reds with Karleigh McEwen of the Hurricanes winning the individual event for the second straight season.
McEwen's Hurricanes teammates Jaylene Holmes-Tang finished in second place with Daria Leidenius finishing in fourth overall. Darcy Fuller of UNB rounded out the top three.
Joining McEwen, Holmes-Tang, Fuller and Leidenius at this months CCAA National Championship at Fox Meadow is Casey McDonnell of UNB as these five players will represent the ACAA with Holland College and UNB.
McEwen was happy to take home the title for the second straight year.
"Our team enjoyed gaining experience through tournament golf on our home course prior to hosting Nationals in a few weeks. We are looking forward to a great tournament in our home province."
Head coach Trevor Giggey was happy with how his players responded when the pressure was on.
"I was very pleased to see how hard everyone prepared for the ACAA championships this week. I am even happier to see that the hard work paid off for both the men and women. I'm looking forward to having two more solid weeks of preparation before hosting the National Championship at Fox Meadow."
