Hurricanes come from behind in home opener to get first win of the season

The Holland Hurricanes men's volleyball team got their first win of the season after coming from behind to defeat UNBSJ Seawolves in five sets.

The Hurricanes and Seawolves went back and forth in the first set. The Hurricane took a 15-12 lead when Seawolves head coach Dino Karatzios called a time-out.

The Hurricanes came out of the timeout on fire, outscoring the Seawolves 4-1 and forcing them to call another timeout. The Seawolves found momentum as they were able to claw back from the six-point deficit and take the first set 28-26.

The second set saw both teams going back and forth, as the Seawolves held an 18-17 lead when head coach Karatzios called another timeout. The rest of the set continued to be back and forth as the two teams traded point after point.

The Hurricanes trailed 21-20, when Shannon Howell was substituted into the game. Howell was able to get momentum back on the Hurricanes side, as the Hurricanes took the set, 25-23.

Much like the first two sets the third set saw a lot of back-and-forth action, as both teams traded points. The Seawolves were trailing for most of the third set, but were able to tie it up at 15 and they didn't look back after that. They outscored the Hurricanes 10-5 in the remainder of the set and won the set 25-20.

The start of the fourth set saw the Hurricanes struggle as they fell behind 5-1 early in the set. The Canes were able to storm back, outsourcing the Seawolves 14-6 and forcing another time-out to be called.

Coming from the timeout the Hurricanes were able to hold on to the momentum and they didn't take their foot off the gas. They won the set 25-21 and forced a fifth and final set.

The Hurricanes grabbed the lead early in the fifth set and led 8-6 at the halfway point of the set. Coming out of the break the Hurricanes took control of the game. They were able to hold onto their lead and take the set 15-11 for their first win this season.

The teams will face off again on Sunday at 12 pm.
