2019-20 ACAA Men's Basketball Basketball Champions - MTA

2019-20 ACAA Men's Basketball Basketball Champions - MTA

The 2020 ACAA Men’s Basketball Championship was reflective of the closely contested season throughout the year.  In semifinal play, the number four seed Mount Mystics, defeated the number one seed Holland  College with a 87-80 overtime win in a very exciting game. The other semi saw the Mount Allison Mounties best the STU Tommie’s, 92-66.

The ACAA Championship game saw the MTA Mounties come out with the early first quarter lead with key post points from Sam Pierson who tallied 6 points in the quarter and helped the Mounties to an 18-14 intense first quarter in front of a packed house. The second quarter saw the shooting ability of the Mounties as they hit three of seven from behind the arc and also 62% overall from the field. Four players scored five points and if it weren’t for the efforts of Mystics senior Liam Mitchell, who scored 11 points in the quarter, the half time score could have been much larger for the Mounties as they head to the break with a 42-31 lead. In the third both teams made mini runs with the first one by the Mounties but a response by the Mystics kept them in the game and narrowed the gap to an 8 point, 61-53 lead for the Mounties when the 3rd was all set and done.  The Mystics opened the final ten minutes with a 7-2 run over the first four minutes in a tight back and forth defensive game. The Mounties answered the bell with a couple transition baskets and opened the lead back up to 7 points with about four minutes to go. Both teams traded baskets after that but the Mystics were forced to foul the Mounties who made their free throws down the stretch and ended up with a very entertaining and hard fought 81-75 victory to claim the 2020 ACAA Men’s Basketball Championship Banner.

Congratulation to the Mount Allison Mounties!  Player of the game for the Mystics was Liam Mitchell and for the MTA Mounties was Sam Pierson.

The Mounties were scheduled to represent the ACAA at the CCAA National tournament held in Ontario at Humber College March 19-21st, however that tournament was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
