2019-20 Women's Basketball Champions - MSVU

The ACAA Women’s Basketball Championships provided fans with some great women’s basketball. In Semifinal play,  University Kings College, seeded fourth, defeated number one ranked St Thomas Tommies in an intense game with a final score of 57-56. The other semi saw the Mount Mystics ranked second vs Holland College who were ranked third. The game was well played by both teams with the Mystics coming out on top 86-72.

The championship game was set; cross-town rivals, MSVU (2) versus University of Kings College (4).  The stands were filled to capacity in a sea of royal and navy blue as both teams took to the court with drive and determination to win the 2019-2020 championship banner. The UKC Blue Devils came out very aggressive early causing the Mystics to struggle to find any flow to their game on both ends early which gave UKC the jump, to a 27-20 first quarter lead. In the second quarter it was more a back and forth affair and by the end of the half the UKC Blue Devils led 39-37.  In the third quarter the Mystics gained their composure and gave the Mystics the  momentum heading into the final 10 minutes up 12 points with a 62-50 lead.  In the final quarter, the UKC team did everything they could to recover after the 3rd quarter but the clock ran out.  The  ACAA Championship banner was secured by the Mount Mystics with a final score of 83-66.  Player of the game was Kelsey McGrath for the Mystics and Claire Hickman for the Blue Devils.

It was back-to-back championships for the Mystics.  They were scheduled to represent the ACAA conference in the CCAA National Championships in Nanaimo, BC March 19-21st, however that tournament was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
