2022 ACAA Women's Rugby Championship

2022 ACAA Women's Rugby Championship

Dates: November 5, 2022

Host: University of New Brunswick Fredericton

Site: College Field, Fredericton, NB.

FREDERICTON, NB - The UNB REDS will be aiming for a seventh-consecutive ACAA Women’s Rugby title on Saturday when they face-off against the Holland College Hurricanes, at UNB’S College Field.

The REDS capped off their sixth-consecutive undefeated regular season, and continued an unprecedented 41-game regular season winning streak, scoring four or more tries in all seven regular season games.

The REDS are led by 4th year wing Alex Morrell (Lakeville Corner, NB). Morrell has really come into her own in her senior season, scoring seven tries, while being a physical veteran presence on both sides of the ball for a UNB squad that has added several new players this season.

Standing in between the Reds and the ACAA banner are the “new kids on the block”, the Holland College Hurricanes.

2022 marked the inaugural season for women’s rugby at Holland College. While this young, upstart squad might be new, they haven’t let that inexperience affect them.

Making waves in its first season, the Hurricanes finished the regular season with a 4-3 record, good enough for third place.

Holland College is led by 3rd year fly-half Kathleen Curran (Kildare Capes, PE). From day one, Curran has been the leader both on and off the pitch for the Hurricanes. The intensity and drive she brings helped take a group of players, many of whom were new to the sport, to new heights on the pitch.

The Hurricanes were able to punch their ticket to the ACAA final by defeating the Mount Allison Mounties 21-12, in Sackville, in the semi-finals - an unprecedented feat in their first season as a program.

In a rematch of last season’s championship match, the REDS were able to book their spot in the final by defeating the Blue Devils.

Can the REDS continue to build on their incredible run and bring home a seventh-consecutive ACAA title, or will the Hurricanes spoil the party and bring a trophy back to PEI in just their first season in the league?

The answer will come in an action-packed final at College Field in Fredericton on Saturday.
