From Soccer Fields To Blueberry Fields: MacEachern Pursues PhD In Sustainable Agriculture

Truro, NS – Craig MacEachern has been a familiar face around the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus since he began his career as a student-athlete with the DAL AC Rams in 2011. The former Rams Men’s Soccer player is now the program’s Head Coach.

“From my first semester on campus, I fell in love with the small, friendly community where faculty and staff seem to all know your name and are concerned with how you are doing. To me, this is what makes the AC so incredible. You can get a world-class education while feeling like you are part of a family,” said MacEachern.

During his five-year playing career, MacEachern was a key player for the Rams Men’s Soccer team, serving as the team captain for four of those seasons.

As impressive as his career was on the pitch, his academic accomplishments were second to none.

  • (4x) All Academic Athlete
  • (2x) CCAA Academic All Canadian
  • Bob Coe Award for excellence in academics, athletics, sportsmanship, and leadership.

In 2015, MacEachern completed a Bachelor of Technology in Applied Science with distinction, winning the University Medal in Applied Science and a Graduate Research Training Initiative Scholarship.

Since his debut as Head Coach of the Men’s Soccer team in 2017, MacEachern has completed his Master of Science, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Sustainable Agriculture. His research focuses on weed management in wild blueberry fields through precision application of granular herbicides. With aspirations of completing his PhD later this year, MacEachern hopes to remain in sustainable agriculture. “I feel these are the key issues of our generation and I have the potential and ability to make impactful contributions,” he said.

MacEachern’s impact on campus extends far beyond the soccer pitch.

“I can’t say enough positive things about Craig and his impact on our campus,” says DAL AC’s Athletic Director, Andrew Harding. “What often gets overlooked is that he is always finding time to support campus events in addition to coaching soccer. He is an outstanding role model for our student-athletes and is highly respected in all areas of the Dal AC Community.”

MacEachern has cherished being able to call DAL AC his home since first stepping foot on campus in 2011, and he plans to remain part of the Rams community for years to come.

“My five years of playing varsity soccer at Dal AC, taught me discipline, responsibility, accountability, and the importance of teamwork,” explained MacEachern. “As I've transitioned from player to coach, I've learned the importance of positive communication and I recognize the benefits in taking time to build people up, while pushing them to be their best. Dal AC soccer has been an integral part of my development and I am looking forward to leading our team in future seasons.”
