Mystics top Blue Devils

Mystics top Blue Devils

The battle for first place overall was up for grabs as the Mystics, ranked 6th nationally hosted the 11th ranked University of King's Blue Devils in a tilt of two teams with only one loss on the season. The Mystics lone loss was to the Blue Devils back in November at the Kingdom.

The first quarter both teams started out tenative with their play and several unforced turnovers resulted in easy transition points with very little half court sets or three point shots taken, which left the score tied at 17 after 10 minutes. The second quarter both teams settled down but it was the Mystics who forced several turnover that they converted into free throws and three pointers. Victoria Srickland came into the game and added 10 points in the quarter and Samia Amadou added a defensive presence with her rebounding and high activity levels that helped spur the 29-14 run and a 15 point half time lead. The Mystics stretched it out to 19 after the break into the third, but the Blue Devils chipped away and closed the gap to eight points. The Mystics did however counter that before the quarter break and maintained a double digit lead heading inot the fourth by 13. The final quarter was a back and forth affair with the Mystics scoring on free throws and turn overs committed by the Blue Devils and closed the game out with a 80-67 win.

The Mystics moved into sole possession of first place in the ACAA with a 10-1 record and will host Crandall University on Saturday the 27th while the 8-2 Blue Devils get right back at it as they head out on the road to face the Holland Hurricanes tomorrow, Jan 21st.
