The women's Hurricanes basketball team (8-2) took on the STU Tommies (3-5) in the first of two games to be played this weekend.
The Hurricanes took a commanding 28-13 lead, who went on an 8-0 run in the final minute of the first quarter. Amy Plaggenhoef put an exclamation mark on the quarter with a massive buzzer beater three-pointer.
The Tommies responded well, outscoring the Hurricanes 24-13 in the second quarter. Making clutch defensive stops when needed.
The Tommies fought back hard, gaining the lead after a big three-pointer by Katie Vidito. They maintained this lead throughout the third, ending the quarter being up 57-53. The Hurricanes struggles were obvious, who totaled 21 turnovers by the end of third.
It was an intense fourth quarter, but the Hurricanes managed to pull away, winning the game 69-64.
Key players from the Hurricanes included Alexa Rancourt with 20 points, and 9 rebounds. Lauren Armstrong also had a strong performance with 17 points, 5 assists, and 11 rebounds.
Key players from the Tommies included Katie Vidito with 14 points, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. Kylee Roi was able to put up a strong defensive performance with 4 steals.
This win improves the Hurricanes record to 9-3, keeping them at the top of the standings. The Hurricanes now are on a five games streak, while the Tommies drop to a disappointing 3-6.
Both teams will play each other again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Holland College McMillan Centre.
