Mounties advance to semis after defeating Seawolves

The Mount Allison Mounties secured a decisive 51-31 victory over UNBSJ in a game that showcased their defensive dominance and balanced offensive attack. The matchup, held on February 28, 2025, at the G. Forbes Elliot Athletics Centre, saw Mount Allison take control early and maintain their lead throughout, despite a valiant effort from UNBSJ.

The first quarter set the tone for the game, with Mount Allison establishing a strong defensive presence. UNBSJ struggled to find their rhythm, scoring only 6 points in the quarter. Mount Allison's Katie Feasby and Jillian Mumford led the charge, combining for several key baskets to give their team a 15-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. Feasby finished the half with 7 points, while Mumford added 5 points and 4 rebounds.

The second quarter saw UNBSJ attempt to close the gap, with Jenny Cripps and Laura Prekaj hitting crucial shots. Cripps, UNBSJ's standout performer, kept her team in the game with her sharp shooting and playmaking. She finished the game with 10 points, including 2 three-pointers, and added 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 4 steals. Despite her efforts, Mount Allison's balanced attack, led by Emma Roberts and Amelia Mitchell, kept UNBSJ at bay. Mitchell's mid-range jumper and Roberts' playmaking helped Mount Allison extend their lead to 25-15 by halftime.

The third quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams trading missed shots and turnovers. UNBSJ's Ellie Collins and Ava Sprague provided a spark, but Mount Allison's defense, anchored by Mumford and Feasby, limited UNBSJ's scoring chances. The Mounties took a 37-28 lead into the final quarter, thanks to timely baskets from Roberts and Mitchell.

In the fourth quarter, UNBSJ made a push to close the gap. Collins and Prekaj continued to lead the charge, but Mount Allison's Haley Hemphill and Feasby hit crucial free throws to keep their team ahead. Despite UNBSJ's efforts, Mount Allison's defense held firm, and a late jumper by Feasby sealed the victory for the Mounties.

Mount Allison's balanced attack was led by Katie Feasby, who finished with 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting, including two three-pointers. Jillian Mumford added 6 points and 11 rebounds, while Emma Roberts contributed 2 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist. For UNBSJ, Jenny Cripps was the standout performer, showcasing her versatility with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 1 assist. Laura Prekaj also contributed 10 points, but UNBSJ struggled with their overall shooting, converting just 14.3% from the field.

Mount Allison's ability to control the boards, with a 42-31 rebounding advantage, and their efficient free-throw shooting (70.6%) were key factors in the win. UNBSJ fought valiantly but couldn't overcome their shooting struggles and turnovers, which Mount Allison converted into crucial points.

With this victory, Mount Allison advances in the ACAA Championship, showcasing their depth and defensive prowess. UNBSJ's resilience and fight, led by Jenny Cripps, kept them in the game, but they'll look to regroup and bounce back in their next matchup.
