Fredericton, NB – The St. Thomas University Tommies came away with a 2-1 victory against their rivals, the University of New Brunswick Saint John Seawolves, on Wednesday evening. This was the first win for the Tommies this season.

The Tommies came out strong in their first home game of the season and new head coach, David Itoafa, was delighted with the result.

"Fantastic result. It's so nice to see all the hard work put in by the players and the staff come to a good result, so we're very happy about that."

The game started slowly until Tommies' defender, Jazmyne McLaughlin (Fredericton, NB), rose highest in a sea of bodies to break the deadlock. New Tommies recruit, Caitlyn Steeves (Hampton, NB), ran through on goal minutes after and calmly rolled the ball into the corner of the net and scored the game-winner. Steeves gave an electrifying performance and was the best player for the Tommies. Itoafa was very impressed with her performance.

"It was nice to see her take players on and get that goal and there is definitely more to come from her as the season goes on."

The Seawolves managed to get a goal back through Joce Splitgerber (Orono, ON) but it proved not enough as Itoafa claimed his first win as the new coach.

"It's an amazing experience for me and I think as we keep building and playing this way it's going to be more of the same," he said after the match.

The Tommies next match will take place at Grant Harvey Field on Saturday when they take on DAL AC in their Mary Cronin Memorial Game at 1pm. The Seawolves next match will also be on Saturday when they host Holland College.
